Luminists and Realists: Light, colour, and the sublime in late C19 art

Peder Severin Krøyer, Summer evening on Skagen Sønderstrand, 1893

Skagen, Denmark, Skagens Museum: https://skagenskunstmuseer.dk/en/works/summer-evening-skagen-sonderstrand/

The late nineteenth century saw a wonderful flowering of realist painting.  Influenced by the Impressionists in their handling of light and colour, these painters were also continuing the great romantic tradition of capturing the sublime.  We shall look at the work of the Wanderers in Russia, the Skagen group in Denmark, and Joaquin Sorolla in Spain, among others.
